Customs in Portugal
As Portugal is part of the European Union, shipping from a country within the EU means that you won’t have to worry about customs clearance or duties and taxes. This isn’t the case from shipments from outside the EU – in these cases the packages will have to pass through customs as normal and duties and taxes will be applied to shipments worth more than €150.
When shipping internationally, paperwork is vital. One common mistake is with declaring the contents of the package – instead of declaring generally, such as “footwear”, it’s better to be specific, such as “woman’s leather shoes.”
Collection & delivery
Courier collection
When you’re sending a parcel, we can collect your parcel on the same day you make your booking throughout both the UK and Portugal. This is not the case for shipments that are particularly large or heavy, however, as these need to be booked at least a day in advance.
If you are not available or would rather not wait for a collection, you can drop off your parcel at one of the hundreds of drop-off points around the UK. This option is at your convenience, and is also cheaper than shipping directly, saving you even more money.
Portugal delivery
We can’t tell you exactly when your parcel will be delivered – just that it will be between 9am and 7pm on normal working days. You can narrow that window down by using one of our timed delivery options, which allow you to request certain delivery slots.
Most of our courier partners will require a signature to confirm delivery. However, some couriers will instead leave your package in a safe place or with a neighbour. If you require proof of delivery for your shipment, please choose our signed-for upgrade when you make your booking.
Tracking when shipping to Portugal
At Parcelcompare, we know that every package is important. That’s why offer free door-to-door tracking of every parcel that we carry. From the moment it leaves your hands, you can keep an eye on your shipment, all the way until it arrives at its destination.
Parcelcompare ships thousands of parcels safely every month, but in the unlikely event that there is a problem with your package we will get in touch with you and your receiver with more information. That way, everyone knows the situation.
Sending gifts to Portugal
In much the same way as a normal parcel, when you’re sending a gift to Portugal from inside the European Union, there’s no need to worry about duties and taxes. For shipments from outside the EU, there is a gift exemption for parcels worth less than €45 – packages worth more than that will have fees applied as usual, which the receiver will be responsible for paying.
It’s important to be specific when declaring contents – if you’re not, your package could be delayed in clearing customs. To avoid this, ensure that your customs paperwork is clear – for example, instead of just calling the contents a gift, declare that your shipments contains “Gifts – Train set”, for example.
Large and heavy shipping to Portugal
Shipping Large parcels are no problem for Parcelcompare – we’re experts in delivering oversized packages that weigh up to 1,000kg and are up to 270cm in length. Whether you want to send by road freight using a haulier, port-to-port air-freight delivery, or door-to-door courier, Parcelcompare has a logistics solution for your needs.
Our only requirements are that your shipment is appropriately packaged and that you book a day in advance. Parcels of a certain size do need to be on a pallet, however, and if you require a forklift truck or special provisions, please let us know in advance.

Packaging your parcel
Shipping a package internationally is a complex process, during which your parcel will change hands regularly. To make sure that there are no problems in transit, it’s vital to properly package your parcel.
When packing your goods, there are three key points to keep in mind:

1. Get a new box
This is the first line of defence for books and priceless statues alike. Make sure you use a new, double corrugated cardboard box – old boxes are liable to burst or be crushed on the journey.
2. Pack your box
Wrap your goods individually, after all, you don’t want them to damage each other. Surround them in your box with plenty of packaging material, and make sure they don’t move at all.
Seal your box
Your packing tape can help protect your box’s weakest points, so be generous. Wrap around your box three times in a union flag pattern, then add your labels so that all information can be seen.
Holidays and gift giving occasions in Portugal
There’s plenty of reason to celebrate when you’re living in Portugal, with public holidays aplenty to give a chance for revelries. And as everybody is joining in the celebrations, this means that couriers don’t operate on public holidays either – parcels aren’t collected or delivered. So if you’re planning on sending a package to Portugal around the dates below, give yourself plenty of time to book to avoid disappointment.
