Customs in France
If you're sending to France from the UK then you will have to ensure your paperwork is correct, to avoid paying more than you should. When our system sees you're shipping from one of those countries, it will generate the relevant customs forms for you. Document shipments, even if they're from outside the EU, do not have to pass through customs.
As of 1 July, 2026, the EU has removed its de minimis exemption on low-value packages entering the EU. That means all parcels entering the EU may be liable for Customs duties. Small businesses should be aware that a flat customs duty of €3 now applies to all business-to-consumer (B2C) parcels valued under €150. The €3 charge is applied per item classification, so a parcel containing multiple different types of goods may incur multiple €3 charges.

If your parcel is heavier than 50kg or longer than 180cm – you will have to book your collection at least a day in advance. If this is the case, please bear in mind that you will also have to provide your courier with assistance in loading and unloading your goods.
If you're sending a pallet or an item requiring a tail lift or pallet truck, please contact our customer care team prior to pick-up.
France delivery
If you are not sure that you will be available for a delivery attempt, you can choose to make use of an Access Point. These are places like your local store that are authorised to accept delivery on your behalf. That means they'll hold your parcel until you can pick it up and – and it also means lower prices for you.
Alternatively, some of our courier networks, such as UPS, will leave some parcels in a safe place without having to collect a signature. If your shipment requires proof of delivery, please use the upgrade option 'Signature required' on our 'select service page'.
Tracking when shipping to France
When booking a shipment to France with Parcelcompare, you also get free door to door tracking. That means that you'll be able to follow your parcel from the moment it leaves your hands until it is passed over to your recipient.
Parcels are scanned at every step of the shipment process, so you'll be able to see exactly how your shipment is progressing simply by entering your parcel tracking number into our tracking tool. We'll also notify you and your recipient by email if any delays occur on-route.
Sending gifts to France
Gifts from non-EU countries will have duties and taxes applied unless they are worth less than €45. If the parcel is worth more than €45 it will not be eligible for a gift exemption, though it may still be eligible for a low value exemption.
It's important to remember when shipping gifts that you need to declare the exact nature of the gifts, including a description and the value. If you do not, there may be delays or other problems in clearing customs.
Sending luggage or excess baggage to France
Parcelcompare makes it simple to send your luggage to France when you're off on holiday, or your personal goods when you're making a move. Just bear in mind that if you're planning to send luggage or suitcases, you'll need to send them in a box or otherwise protect it, as we can't guarantee that the externals won't be damaged in transit.
Sending shoes:
On the customs forms, the sender must include the following when sending shoes:
Materials used in the shoe (soles and upper).
Type of shoes (sports, sandals, boots).
Who the shoe is intended for (child, woman, man).
If leather, then the type of leather must also be listed on the invoice.
Any shipments with customs forms that simply say 'Medicine' will be detained by customs. In some cases, vitamins may be classified as medicine, so a complete list of ingredients should accompany the invoice to avoid delays.
Important points of note:
Personal effects are defined as products used by a single person. Jewellery or clothing are good examples of personal effects.
If goods are used by multiple people in a family, they are known as ‘household effects’ and are treated differently during customs clearance.
Bear in mind that when you send personal effects to France, you may need to fill in additional documentation.
Large parcel and air freight to France
Parcelcompare makes it simple to send even oversized parcels to France, as pallet and air freight services cater to packages of up to 1,000kg in weight and as long as 270cm, including pallets. And if your parcel isn't quite so hefty, our large and heavy services are available for non-pallet packages of up to 50kg. Moving bulky parcels takes a bit of extra organisation, so you'll need to book a large and heavy shipment at least a day in advance, and be available to offer your courier assistance in loading and unloading the shipment if necessary.
Sending food to France
Food is one of Parcelcompare's most popular shipments, so we know just how to make it easy to ship food to France. Just keep in mind that there are a few things that you can't send. Homemade goods and other perishable items, for example, are not allowed to be sent. You can still ship store bought food though, as long as they are sealed.
What you can send:

Items must be in the original manufacturers packaging and unopened
The food label needs to list all the ingredients
The best before date must be displayed on the packaging
Examples of pershable foods: Crisp and savory foods, Chocolates and candy, Canned foods, Herbs and Spices in sealed containers, tea bags, Jams and other preserves
What you cannot send:
Perishable foods
Foods with a shelf life of less than 6 months
Homemade foods or any foods not in the original manufacturers packaging
Foods that can spoil during transit
Food in packaging that have been opened
Food that does not contain a food label listing the ingredients
Packaging your parcel
In the process of sending parcels to France your package will be handled multiple times. In order to ensure that the contents of your parcel arrive in one piece, it's important to properly package them before they are shipped.
In order to ensure that your goods arrive undamaged, there are three key things you need to be aware of when packing your parcel:
1. PICK A BOX
It pays to invest in a decent box for your items, as a used one could be hiding faults which won't become apparent until it falls apart during delivery and your goods are damaged. If you're sending more than 10kg in weight, then we recommend a double-lined box.
2. GET PACKING
Wrap up each item carefully before they go into your box, and surround them with a packing material, such as Styrofoam or bubble wrap, such that there is at least a 6cm cushion between them and the box sides. When its full you should be able to shake the box without anything rattling.
3. SEAL IT UP
Don't cut costs with your tape, get good quality packaging tape and wrap it around your parcel three times in a Union Jack pattern. This should cover all seals and corners. Peel off any old labels and make sure your shipping label is securely attached and visible.
