Customs in Germany
Because Germany is a part of the European Union, if you are sending parcels from a country within the EU there are no duties or taxes applied. However, if you are shipping to Germany from outside the EU (and remember that the UK is no longer in the EU) there are some duties and fees that may be applied to your package. This is not the case if the value of what you are sending is below €22. If your shipment is worth more than €22 but less than €150, then customs duties are applied, but there are no taxes.
As of 1 July, 2026, the EU has removed its de minimis exemption on low-value packages entering the EU. That means all parcels entering the EU may be liable for Customs duties. Small businesses should be aware that a flat customs duty of €3 now applies to all business-to-consumer (B2C) parcels valued under €150. The €3 charge is applied per item classification, so a parcel containing multiple different types of goods may incur multiple €3 charges.
Collection & delivery
Courier collection
Once you've made your booking, we'll schedule the courier to pick-up your parcel on your requested collection date. For many areas across the UK and Germany we can collect your parcel on the same day you make your booking. For bulky items, you will need to book a day in advance.
If you're sending a pallet or an item requiring a tail lift or pallet truck, please contact our customer care team prior to collection.
Germany delivery
With the exception of our timed delivery services, we deliver between 9am and 7pm on normal working days. If your first delivery attempt is unsuccessful, we make another two attempts before the parcel is returned to you.
Some of our partner couriers, such as UPS, may leave a parcel in a safe place without requiring a signature. If you need proof of delivery, please use the upgrade option 'Signature required' on our 'select service page'
Tracking when shipping to Germany
When you book with Parcelcompare, we want to make sure you have the best possible experience. With that in mind, we offer free door-to-door tracking with every shipment, so you can track and trace your parcel right through to delivery in Germany. The moment there's an issue or delay, we'll let you know by changing your package status to 'exception'.
In order to make sure that you don't miss anything, we'll also drop you and your recipient an email if any transit delays occur, so you're always in the loop.
Sending gifts to Germany
When you're sending gifts to Germany from a non-EU country, there are several exemptions in place. If your shipment is worth €45 or less, there are no duties or taxes applied in clearing customs. If they are worth more than €45 but less than €700, there is a flat duty rate of 17.5% of the package's value applied. If it is worth more than that, there are no exemptions in place and you have to pay duties and taxes as normal. If duties or taxes are applied, the recipient will be contacted to pay the fees before the package is cleared from customs. If you are sending from a country within the EU, there will be no duties or taxes applied.
When sending gifts, it can be tempting to be deliberately vague so the contents are a surprise for the recipient. However, this can cause problems in clearing customs, so make sure to properly declare your goods.
Large parcel and air freight
Want to send something cumbersome to Germany? Parcelcompare are experts in large parcel shipping – with our pallet shipping and German air freight services we can deliver bulky packages that are up to 270cm in length and 1,000kg in weight. If you're planning on shipping an oversized package to Germany then make sure you keep in mind that collection of packages that are heavier than 50kg will need to be booked 24 hours in advance, and you may be required to be on hand to offer assistance in loading or unloading the shipment.
Sending food to Germany
Christmas isn't the only time of the year that your friends in Germany might be craving some food from home. There are a couple of extra rules and regulations to keep in mind when sending something delicious, but if you stick to Parcelcompare's guidelines then they'll be sucking Werther's in no time!
There are a couple of unusual restrictions when sending food to Germany
Potatoes are not allowed to be imported into Germany.
Certain vitamin supplements are considered medicine in Germany, so cannot be sent.
If you're not sure this applies to your shipment, be sure to contact German customs before sending it.
What you can send:
Non-perishable foods
Store bought foods with a best before date over 6 months away
Items must be in the original manufacturers packaging and unopened
The food label needs to list all the ingredients
The best before date must be displayed on the packaging
Examples of pershable foods: Crisp and savory foods, Chocolates and candy, Canned foods, Herbs and Spices in sealed containers, tea bags, Jams and other preserves
What you cannot send:
Perishable foods
Foods with a shelf life of less than 6 months
Homemade foods or any foods not in the original manufacturers packaging
Foods that can spoil during transit
Food in packaging that have been opened
Food that does not contain a food label listing the ingredients
Packaging your parcel
Over the course of its journey a parcel will be handled multiple times, so to ensure that it arrives in the same condition it left in, it's important to make sure that it is properly packaged.
To that end, there are three key things you need to be aware of when packing your parcel:
1. GET A STURDY BOX
New boxes are better than used, as they will not be weakened by damage from previous trips. Old boxes may have structural weaknesses that could lead to bursting or being crushed in transit. If your item is more than 10kg then a double-lined cardboard box will give added support.
2. PLENTY OF PACKAGING
Your items should be able to survive a drop from chest height; this means that they need plenty of cushioning. Wrap them individually, then suspend them in packaging, such as parcel peanuts, so that they're at least 6cm from the box sides.
3. TAPE TO TRAVEL
Using strong packaging tape create a Union Jack pattern around your parcel, wrapping the tape three times around so that it covers corners and joins. Make sure your shipping label is the only label on the package and is displayed clearly.
Holidays and gift giving occasions in Germany
Christmas markets may be the main reason you're thinking about Germany during the holidays, but it's important to remember that packages aren't collected or developed on a public holiday. So if you're sending something around the days we've collected below, keep in mind that it may take a day or two longer to arrive.
