Clearing Latvia customs

Since Latvia is a part of the European Union, there’s no need to worry about duties and taxes when your shipment originates from within the EU. For other shipments, there is an exemption from customs fees as long as your goods are worth less than €150, though packages worth more will have duties and taxes applied.

You need to be careful when you’re completing your customs paperwork; if you do not fill out the value and nature of your goods, there may be delays in clearing your customs.

Collection & delivery

Courier collection

It doesn’t take long to get your delivery started when you are shipping with Parcelcompare - after all, we can collect your parcel on the very same day that you make your booking.

That’s not the case for large or bulky parcels however. If you know that your package is particularly heavy, bear in mind that you will have to book a day in advance, and be on hand when your courier arrives to help load or unload your goods.

Latvia delivery

You can expect your goods to arrive between 9am and 7pm on normal working days. We don’t make deliveries on weekends or public holidays, and most of our couriers will attempt to deliver your goods three times before they are returned to you.

If you want to ensure proof of delivery, then choose our ‘signed for’ option when you book your shipment. That means that someone will need to be present to take delivery.

Tracking your delivery to Latvia

If you’d like a brief overview of what it takes to deliver a parcel to another country, then there’s more to appeal to you from Parcelcompare than you might think. Our real-time tracking service updates every time your parcel takes the next step in the process, so you can see in real time the route it has taken to its destination in Latvia.

And if there is a problem, we’ll email you and your recipient to explain the problem and how to go about fixing it.

Sending gifts to Latvia

Just like sending a normal package to Latvia, there’s no need to think about duties and taxes when you’re sending a gift from within the EU – because they don’t exist. From outside the European Union, there’s an exemption from fees for gifts worth less than €45. Goods worth more will be treated as normal packages.

To take advantage of this gift exemption, be sure to make it clear that your goods are being sent as a gift. Don’t neglect to declare the nature and value of your goods to avoid problems or delays in clearing customs. Be specific when you enter the description, for example ‘Gift of Child’s football’.

Sending food to Latvia

There’s always something tasty on hand in Latvia, but sometimes there’s nothing like the taste of home – especially around the holidays. That’s why food is one of Parcelcompare’s most popular gifts, and the reason we’re so proficient at delivering it safe and sound.

There are a few extra rules to keep in mind when you are shipping food internationally, so although we make it simple to ship rice to Riga, sending doughballs to Daugavpils isn’t possible.

What you can send:

Non-perishable foods

  • Store bought foods with a best before date over 6 months away

  • Items must be in the original manufacturers packaging and unopened

  • The food label needs to list all the ingredients

  • The best before date must be displayed on the packaging

  • Examples of pershable foods: Crisp and savory foods, Chocolates and candy, Canned foods, Herbs and Spices in sealed containers, tea bags, Jams and other preserves

What you cannot send:

Perishable foods

  • Foods with a shelf life of less than 6 months

  • Homemade foods or any foods not in the original manufacturers packaging

  • Foods that can spoil in transit.

  • Food in packaging that have been opened

  • Food that does not contain a food label listing the ingredients

Packaging your parcel

There are plenty of horror stories about broken goods, but it’s not as hard to protect your goods as you might think. There are invariably a few bumps or knocks when you ship internationally, so it’s important to make sure that your goods are properly protected.

There are three key points to keep in mind when packing your goods.

1. GET A NEW BOX

Tempting as it is to see if your local supermarket are chucking out any used boxes, these will have already been subjected to pressure and knocks, weakening them for future use. A new box will see you proud.

2. PACK YOUR BOX

Wrap your goods individually, so that they don’t damage each other on the way. Then use plenty of packaging material to suspend your goods, making sure that no part of the item is touching the walls of your box.

3. SEAL YOUR BOX

Use plenty of packing tape; wrap three times around your box in a Union Flag pattern, using plenty of extra tape on the corners and seals – the weakest parts of your box. Add your labels so that all information is clearly visible.

Holidays and gift giving occasions in Latvia

Though we work with some of the most dedicated couriers on the planet, everyone enjoys the chance to have a day off every now and then. That’s why we don’t make deliveries on public holidays, which you should keep in mind if you’re sending something special to arrive on the occasion.

We’ve collected the Latvian Public holidays below, so you’re never taken by surprise.
