Customs in the Netherlands

As the Netherlands is a part of the European Union, you won’t need to worry about paying duties and taxes on the packages that you’re sending, as long as you’re sending from within the EU. In fact, you don’t even have to worry about shipping paperwork at all. On the other hand, if you’re shipping from outside of Europe, keep in mind that duties and taxes will be levied on all parcels worth more than €150, which will have to clear customs.

Customs paperwork is one of the most important parts of shipping internationally. The trick is to make sure that you don’t make the mistake of declaring your goods in a general fashion; declare “wooden animal toys” instead of just “toys” for example.

Collection & delivery

Courier collection

When you book shipping with ParcelCompare, we’ll often be able to come and fetch the parcel by the end of that working day throughout both the UK and the Netherlands. This isn’t the case when you are shipping a parcel that is large or heavy however – you’ll need to book pick-up a day in advance, and also be on hand when your courier arrives to assist in loading up your package.

If you’re sending a pallet or an item requiring a tail lift or pallet truck, please contact our customer care team prior to collection.

Holland delivery

Unless you have chosen one of our timed delivery options, delivery of your parcel will be made between 9am and 7pm on normal working days. Most of our partner carriers will make up to three delivery attempts if the first is unsuccessful, but some like DPD will only make one attempt.

If you aren’t available to take delivery, some couriers such as UPS and FedEx may leave your package in a porch or safe place without needing proof of delivery. If you must have a signature, please use the upgrade option ‘Signature required’ on our ‘select service page’.

Parcel tracking

When you send a parcel with Parcelcompare, we know that it’s important to you, so you can track your package from the moment that it leaves your hands. Parcelcompare’s door-to-door tracking means that you can keep an eye on your parcel until it arrives with your recipient, and if there is a problem with delivery you’ll be one of the first to know.

When there are problems or delays we’ll change your parcel status to “exception” and email you and your recipient so you know about it. To track your parcel at any stage, just enter the tracking number into our tracking tool.

Sending gifts to the Netherlands

If you’re sending from outside of the European Union and your gift is worth more than €45 then it will have to clear customs and will have duties and taxes applied. These will be the responsibility of the package’s recipient, just like a normal parcel.

If you’re sending a gift to Holland, or another area of the Netherlands, and you’d like to take advantage of the gift exemption, make sure that you declare that it’s a gift in your customs paperwork and, like any other shipment, be clear and descriptive in your paperwork. The duties and taxes that are applied will be the responsibility of the receiver, who will be contacted by a customs official in order to ensure that they’re paid.

Large parcel and air freight to the Netherlands

By using our specialist partners like DHL and TNT, Parcelcompare offers a cheap option to ship packages that are up to 270cm in length and 1,000 kg in weight, including pallets. When using our services to send large or heavy shipments to the Netherlands, all you need to do is book a day in advance and be on hand when your courier arrives to assist them in loading your goods.

If your package is so large that you will need a forklift or specialty truck, just let us know when making your booking.

Sending food to the Netherlands

The Netherlands have Speculaas, rollmops and stroopwafels, but their cuisine isn’t for everyone. There’s a reason that food is one of the most popular gifts that we send, and with Parcelcompare it’s a simple matter.

There are some food specific rules to keep in mind when it comes to shipping food however. Parcelcompare knows exactly how it is done though, and all you need to do is follow a few simple rules to get it there without any issues.

What you can send:

Non-perishable foods

  • Store bought foods with a best before date over 6 months away

  • Items must be in the original manufacturers packaging and unopened

  • The food label needs to list all the ingredients

  • The best before date must be displayed on the packaging

  • Examples of pershable foods: Crisp and savory foods, Chocolates and candy, Canned foods, Herbs and Spices in sealed containers, tea bags, Jams and other preserves

What you cannot send:

Perishable foods

  • Foods with a shelf life of less than 6 months

  • Homemade foods or any foods not in the original manufacturers packaging

  • Foods that can spoil during transit

  • Food in packaging that have been opened

  • Food that does not contain a food label listing the ingredients

Packaging your parcel

Shipping to the Netherlands might not sound like a lengthy journey, but your parcel will still change hands multiple times on the way. With so many people passing your parcel along, it’s important to make sure that your goods are properly protected.

When packaging your goods, there are three main points to consider:

1. Use a strong box

Whatever it is you’re sending, your box is the first line of defence. It’s best to use a new box, as older boxes are liable to burst or get crushed during the shipping process. ParcelCompare suggests using a double corrugated cardboard box for goods that weight more than 10kg.

2. Pack tightly

Wrap all your goods individually in wrapping material like bubble wrap first, then place them in the box and surround with packaging. Use plenty of packaging pellets or paper to support your goods, so no part should be touching the walls of your box and they are held firmly in place.

Seal it up

Don’t skimp when you’re picking your packaging tape – strong tape can help shore up any weaknesses your box might have. Wrap around the main body of your box three times, paying special attention to seams and corners, the weakest part of your box.

Holidays and gift giving occasions in the Netherlands

Whether you’re looking forward to a visit from Santa or Sinterklaas, there’s no denying that holidays are a time for celebrating. However, if you’re sending a gift to a loved one it’s worth remembering that couriers won’t deliver on a public holiday, so you need to allow more time for delivery. We’ll factor this in when we give you a quote, but to make sure you don’t end up sending late check out our list of Dutch public holidays below:
