Customs in China
All parcels being sent to China, with the exception of documents, will go through customs before they are allowed into China and they may be subject to import duty and tax. However shipments values under 500 yuan are not subject to import duty.
To make things easy Parcelcompare provides all the documents you need when you book a delivery with us. If you’re sending to China on behalf of a business, we recommend you also enter the tariff code for each product you’re shipping by using this tool.
Collection & delivery
Collection
For packages in most locations, we can pick-up on the same day throughout the UK and China.
However, if your parcel is particularly large – heavier than 50kg or longer than 180cm – you have to book your collection a day in advance and you will also need to assist your courier in loading and unloading your shipment.
If the item you’re sending to China is on a pallet or requires a tail lift or pallet truck, please contact our customer care team prior to collection.
Delivery
For most services, we deliver across China between 9am and 7pm on working days. If the first attempt at delivery is unsuccessful, we will make another two attempts before the parcel is returned to the sender. If you’re using one of our timed delivery services, our delivery attempt will be made at the time of your choosing.
If you cannot be available to take delivery, your package can be delivered to an Access Point. These are local businesses that you can collect your parcel from at your convenience.
Parcel tracking
At every point on your parcel’s journey, it will receive a scan which informs you where your parcel is and whether any delays have occurred. Tracking your parcel to China is easy, simply enter your tracking number into our tracking page to get started.
In order to ensure that you’re in the loop, we’ll also send you real-time track and trace updates if any delivery delays occur. It’s all part of the Parcelcompare service.
Sending gifts to China
When sending gifts to China, there is a gift exemption that means that any gift worth less than 1,000 Yuan will not be charged import duties and taxes. In order to ensure that these exemptions are applied, each item in the parcel must be listed and described in your customs paperwork. Customs requires the receiver’s passport to clear a gift shipment; it is up to the recipient to provide this.
When sending a gift, we recommend you ship it to a private address, otherwise Chinese customs may consider it a commercial shipment, and you will not be able to avail of the Chinese gift exemption.
Sending luggage or excess baggage to China
Avoid excess baggage charges by sending your luggage to China via courier. There is no official exemption for shipping personal effects to China, but for shipments worth less than 1,000 Yuan there will be no import tax charged – duties will however still be applied. Personal shipments include gifts between individuals (of a reasonable quantity and for personal use) and there is some extra paper work that will need to be completed.
Important points of note:
When you are shipping personal effects to China, these are only goods that are used only by an individual, such as clothes and jewellery.
Goods used by more than one person in a household cannot be shipped as personal effects. They are considered ‘household effects’ and are treated differently during customs clearance.
In order to ship personal goods to China, you may be required to complete additional documentation.
Large parcel and air freight to China
Got something large or heavy that you want to send to China? Parcelcompare has the courier for you. We can ship packages up to 1,000kg in weight or 270cm in length on their longest side, including pallets. Making a booking to send a big package to China couldn’t be simpler, just keep in mind that packages that are heavier than 50kg will require at least 24 hours’ advance booking. You’ll also need to be on hand to assist in loading or unloading the delivery when your courier arrives. Sending by air freight means huge cost savings, but delivery normally takes longer.
Sending food to China
China is extremely strict on their rules and regulations around importing food, but as long as you are aware of their rules, you shouldn’t have any trouble getting your food shipment through customs. There is also some extra paperwork that will be required for clearing customs.
When shipping food to China, the recipient of the shipment may also be asked to obtain a Certificate of Quarantine from the Local Inspection and Quarantine Authority. The food items imported are also subject to quarantine inspection as well as normal customs clearance, which may add extra time to the shipping process.
Milk powder and baby milk powder is a hugely popular import in China. If you’re sending milk powder, then there are several further restrictions that you should be aware of:
Milk powder shipments can only be sent to China as personal effects.
Baby milk powder and milk powder quantity must be less than 5 kg per parcel.
The total shipment value for milk powder shipments must be less than 1,000 Yuan
What you can send:
Non-perishable foods
Store bought foods with a best before date over 6 months away
Items must be in the original manufacturers packaging and unopened
The food label needs to list all the ingredients
The best before date must be displayed on the packaging
Examples of pershable foods: Crisp and savory foods, Chocolates and candy, Canned foods, Herbs and Spices in sealed containers, tea bags, Jams and other preserves
What you cannot send:
Perishable foods
Foods with a shelf life of less than 6 months
Homemade foods or any foods not in the original manufacturers packaging
Foods that can spoil during transit
Food in packaging that have been opened
Food that does not contain a food label listing the ingredients
Packaging your parcel
When sending a parcel to China your package will be handed many times, increasing the risk of damage. To make sure that your goods arrive in safely, you have to make sure that they are properly packaged.
Taking simple steps like using good packaging, and diligently wrapping your items, can save a lot of headaches further down the line. Here’s some useful guidelines for you to follow to ensure safe transportation:
1. USE A STRONG BOX
ParcelCompare recommends getting a box new because used boxes are more vulnerable to damage and bursting, as they are already weakened from previous uses. So make a small investment in a strong, double lined box to ensure your products are sufficiently protected.
2. PACK IT CAREFULLY
Wrap your goods individually and place them in a suitable packing material (such as bubble wrap or packing peanuts), so that they are no nearer than 6cm from the box’s inner walls. Nothing should be able to move in the box before you seal it.
3. TAPE IT UP
Don’t scrimp on tape – use parcel tape and go round the box three times in a Union Jack flag pattern, so that all joins and corners are covered. Get rid of any old labels which may be on your parcel and make sure your new shipping labels are securely attached and clearly visible.
Holidays and gift giving occasions in China
China loves to celebrate, and there are plenty of opportunities to do so, with festivals and public holidays throughout the year. When shipping to China around the dates below, it is important to keep in mind that parcels are not collected or delivered on Chinese public holidays. When sending parcels or gifts around festival dates, there are also replacement working days on the weekend to take into account, which may mean that your parcel gets delivered on a Saturday or Sunday.
